Like many bookstores, Mitchell’s Book Corner is a downtown landmark and has been a favorite local gathering place providing the opportunity for conversations and connections that enhance the lives of residents and visitors year-round for decades.
In 2007, with the goal of ensuring the continuity of this independent bookstore, ReMain purchased the property at 54 Main Street.
Today, Mitchell's Book Corner still proudly stands at the top of Main Street for all of Nantucket to enjoy, with ReMain's green renovation of this historic building completed in June 2009. The building renovation was awarded a silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
With the restoration of Mitchell’s Book Corner, ReMain wanted to
demonstrate that it is possible to renovate an historic property in an
environmentally thoughtful way.
To achieve the right balance
between historic preservation and modern environmental building, we
sought the expertise of local engineers, architects, preservationists
and interior designers.
When the renovation was complete, Mimi Beman, whose family owned the building for 40 years, said: “It’s just like the old Mitchell’s, only more!"
