Change Can Preserve and Improve

ReMain President, Wendy Schmidt, along with architect, Rebbeca Weld and Mitchell's former operator, Mary Jennings discuss the community importance of Mitchell's bookstore, preserving the historic fabric of 54 Main during renovation, and the addition of a cozy, multi-functional second floor space.

Quick Facts:

  • ReMain's goal in the renovation was to preserve the character of Mitchell's while greatly improving the building's structure and energy efficiency.
  • The floor plan of the new building is largely the same except for the addition of an elevator that was installed so everyone could access the newly finished second floor.
  • We installed movable bookshelves on the second floor to increase the flexibility of the space for community events, classes, meetings, author dinners and more.
