100 Kilowatt Wind Turbine at Nantucket Public Schools
The Nantucket Public Schools are now partially powered by wind. During the week of September 27, 2010 Alteris Renewables constructed a 100-kilowatt turbine between the football field and back parking lot of Nantucket High School. The structure is approximately 150 feet at the top of the blades.
With the extremely favorable wind conditions on Nantucket, the Northwind 100 direct-drive turbine manufactured in Barre, Vermont is expected to generate about 308,000 kilowatt hours annually, providing 20-30% of Nantucket High School's yearly electrical needs. This sleek machine has a superb operating history at numerous installations and can create electricity with winds as low as 6mph.
The wind turbine provides a platform for renewable energy curriculum at all three levels of the public school system. The Students for Sustainability at Nantucket High School will continue play a role in the turbine project as it goes forward.
Funding for the wind turbine is a collaboration between the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and The Schmidt Family Foundation and donated services from Cape Cod Express, Victor Paving, National Grid and Baines & Jones.
